    Emergency Space

    November 30, 2024

Living in a small home means having to find our emergency space. Whether it’s for a new vintage find, or a visiting child during the holidays, we always seem to need the extra space. When Thanksgiving came this year we received the terrific news that multiple kids were coming home for the holiday. While this is exciting it can also be stressful. We needed to find affordable furniture and some extra space fast!! The only extra room we have is our office. The office not only has my small desk in it, it also has my husband’s large desk, computer…

EVER SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, I KNEW โ€ฆ...that I EVER SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, I KNEW
โ€ฆ...that I wanted to be retired. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Only 4 more years, but who's counting? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

Turns out I'm much better suited for puttering around the garden than city politics anyway. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ˜‚

PUMPKIN SCARRING!! ๐ŸŽƒ Iโ€™ve wanted to try this for PUMPKIN SCARRING!! ๐ŸŽƒ

Iโ€™ve wanted to try this for YEARS, and with my current barn quilt obsession, I knew exactly what I wanted to put on mine. ๐ŸคŽ

Pumpkin scarring is actually pretty simple. While the pumpkin is still young and growing, lightly scratch your design through the outer skin โ€” being careful not to cut too deeply into the pumpkin.

I used a stencil for my barn quilt pattern, but you could do this with letters, initials, simple drawings or just about any design you can trace.

As the pumpkin continues to grow, those little scratches begin to heal and form a raised, corky scar โ€” leaving your design right there on the pumpkin.

Now comes the hardest partโ€ฆ waiting. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Iโ€™ll keep sharing this one as it grows so we can see how the barn quilt changes over the next few weeks!

๐ŸŽƒ SAVE this one if you have pumpkins growing and want to give it a try!

I MADE EXTRAS. ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป Apparently I forgot one little I MADE EXTRAS. ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป

Apparently I forgot one little detail when I shared theseโ€ฆMaking extras and then forgetting to tell anyone about them is not the best sales strategy. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I made a few extra sunflower barn quilts when I was working on mineโ€ฆand then promptly forgot to mention that they were available.

Iโ€™ve been using mine with the sunflowers Iโ€™m drying from the garden, and I just love this little late-summer combination. Thereโ€™s something about those droopy, drying sunflower heads that I think is every bit as pretty as when they were blooming. ๐ŸŒป

You can watch a Reel of me making these IN MY STORIES!!

๐Ÿ‘‰I do have a few extras available if anyone would like one! Just send me a message. ๐ŸคŽ

CAN WE HIT THE PAUSE BUTTON??? ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿค— That little pau CAN WE HIT THE PAUSE BUTTON??? ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿค—

That little pause at the end of summerโ€ฆjust before autumn begins. ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ‚

I made a few quick and simple updates to the hutchโ€”nothing too much since it wonโ€™t be long before Iโ€™m pulling out all of the fall things. ๐Ÿ˜ For now, Iโ€™m enjoying these last little touches of summer around the farmhouse.
And how sweet are these sunflower pillows from my friend Joy over at handsewnbyjoy? ๐ŸŒป (She makes the cutest, most detailed, pillows I've ever seen!!) They were just what this little corner needed to carry it through these last summer days before the pumpkins start making their way in. ๐ŸคŽ

Are you still holding onto summer, or are you already thinking about fall? ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒป

๐Ÿ€Good luck to all of the 127 Yard Sale Shoppers this weekend!!! I won't be going this time. I will, however, be hitting up a flea market tomorrow so STAY TUNED!!

BEAUTY & SUPPORT ๐ŸŒผ There are little moments in th BEAUTY & SUPPORT ๐ŸŒผ

There are little moments in the garden that remind me to slow down... today it was a hummingbird stopping by while I was filming.ย

I've been using the vego_garden plant support obelisks throughout my flower garden, and I love how they add structure without taking away from the beauty of the blooms.

They're sturdy, simple to install, and help support everything from climbing vines to tall flowers that need a little extra encouragement.

One of my favorite things about gardening is finding pieces that are both practical and beautiful... and these have quickly become one of those pieces. ๐Ÿค—

And this won't be the last time you see these obelisks .... I have a fun fall decorating idea planned for them that I can't wait to share. ๐ŸŒป

๐Ÿ‘‰If you'd like to see the Vego Garden Plant Supports I'm using, you can find them through the link in my bio. Be sure to use my DISCOUNT CODE to save on your order:ย

MOMENTS THAT DON'T QUITE FEEL REAL. ๐ŸคŽ Every time MOMENTS THAT DON'T QUITE FEEL REAL. ๐ŸคŽ

Every time a new magazine arrives and I see our little farmhouse inside... I get that same feeling all over again.

It never gets old. ๐ŸคŽ

I'm so thankful that this small house, these gardens, and the simple DIY projects we create here have found their way into the pages of so many beautiful magazines and books.

It's a reminder that you never know where sharing something you love might lead. ๐Ÿค—

Thank you for following along, cheering us on, and making moments like this possible. I truly don't take a single one for granted. ๐Ÿ™

A heartfelt thank you to folkmagazine , countrylivingmag countrysamplerhome , Country Sampler, Country Sampler Farmhouse Style, thecountrydoor, inhergardenmagazine , betterhomesandgardens, americanfarmhousestyle, aprimitiveplacemagazine , traumwohnen_magazin , landleben_magazin , and Judy Condon marshhomesteadantiques for welcoming our little farmhouse and the DIY projects we love creating into your pages.

And to think we're also getting ready for another feature in American Farmhouse Style, celebrating a front porch contest we were honored to win last year... it still feels like a dream.๐Ÿ˜

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. ๐Ÿ™Here's to small houses, beautiful gardens, simple DIY projects, and the wonderful community that continues to make this journey so incredibly special. ๐ŸคŽ

DIY VINTAGE FARM STAND CRATE ๐ŸŒป I've always loved DIY VINTAGE FARM STAND CRATE ๐ŸŒป

I've always loved the look of those old farm stands with weathered wooden crates overflowing with flowers and fresh produce. Thereโ€™s just something so charming about them. ๐Ÿ˜

Since I didn't have one, I decided to make my own using an old wooden box and one of my favorite paint techniques. The best part? You don't need a Cricutโ€”just inexpensive vinyl mailbox letters!

Here's how I made it:
๐ŸŒป Start with an old wooden crate or box.
๐ŸŒป Paint the area where your lettering will be.
๐ŸŒป Apply 3" vinyl mailbox letters, starting with the center letter and working outward.
๐ŸŒป Press each letter down firmly.
๐ŸŒป Paint the entire crate your final color.
๐ŸŒป Peel away the letters to reveal the wording underneath.
๐ŸŒป Lightly sand and wipe on a little stain for that timeworn, vintage look.

Remember my HERB wooden carrier I made!? I used the same technique!!!! ๐Ÿค—

Here are some other fun word ideas: PUMPKINS, FLOWERS, APPLES, EGGS, MARKET, GARDEN...... the possibilities are endless!

I filled mine with sunflowers for late summer, but I already want to make a PUMPKIN one for Fall!!!!! ๐Ÿ‚

โœจ Save this DIY for later and let me know... what word would you put on your crate? ๐ŸคŽ

"I WOULD NEVER STOOP SO LOW AS TO BE FASHIONABLE. "I WOULD NEVER STOOP SO LOW AS TO BE FASHIONABLE. THAT'S THE EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD TO DO." ~ DOLLY PARTON ๐Ÿ

That quote has stayed with me.

I've never wanted a home that looked like everyone else's. I wanted one that told OUR STORY.๐Ÿค—

Give me primitive bees in August, sunflowers drying in the kitchen, handmade pieces, old cupboards, and collections gathered over time. Those are the things that make this house feel like home.๐ŸคŽ

Trends come and go. A home filled with things you truly love never goes out of style. ๐ŸŒป

#dollyparton #quotestoliveby #latesummer #shelfstyling #PrimitiveStyle
AUGUST ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป Sunflowers are hanging to dry in just AUGUST ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป

Sunflowers are hanging to dry in just about every corner of the house these days. ๐Ÿ˜

Unfortunately, two of my vintage greenhouse windows were damaged during a recent storm, so I can't dry my sunflower heads out there like I normally do. Drying them outside always comes with the risk of critters finding them first, so for now every peg rack, hook, and little empty spot inside the farmhouse has become a drying place.

It's one of those little reminders that sometimes we simply adapt and make the best of what we have. And honestly... I kind of love seeing sunflowers tucked into every cozy corner of the house. ๐ŸŒป๐ŸคŽ

Oh and our DIY pantry was just featured in the newest Fall countryhome ๐Ÿค—๐ŸคŽ
