DIY spoon rack

Man. I don’t know about you guys, but this quote really hit home for me today. If you turn on the news or scroll through your social media right now, it just seems like our culture is pretty trash, if I’m being honest. I look around and start to get really down about all the horrible-ness of our current climate. But then I look around at my house–which I have decorated with repurposed “trash”–and I realize that Ray is right; there is equal parts trash and treasure!!! Lots of good is happening right now as well:) One particular “trash” that I have repurposed and brings me a lot of joy is my spoon rack! And if there is one thing I get asked about more than my cabinets, it has to be my spoon rack!!! So, I figured that today I would share with you all my DIY spoon rack in hopes that it can remind you of the little treasures we all have:)

Now, I’ll be the first to confess (and kinda brag) that I have a wonderful husband who helps me with a lot of my DIY projects. I do a lot of them on my own (ask Dempsey for all the not-so-graceful snapchats!). However, he does help, and he helped with this one. You can totally do it on your own though! Be a #bossbabe with the drill!! You got this, girl;)

DIY Spoon Rack

• Supplies:
  • 2 2x12x3 ft
  • 3 2.25 x 20 inch
  • Kreg Jig
  • Drill
  • Spade or Paddle drill bit
  • 12 screws
• Directions:
  1. Take the 2 2x12x3 ft boards and join them together using a kreg jig. Set these aside.
  2. Taking the 3 2.25×20 inch strips, measure out where you’d like your spoon holes to be and mark them
  3. With the spade/paddle bit on your drill, drill the marked spoon holes
  4. Paint the boards whatever color you’d like:) or don’t. Up to you!
  5. Leave them for an hour or so to dry
     1. I took some extra time after this to distress the paint a little. Stay tuned for a post on how to do this!:)
  6. Measure out how long your spoons are on the longer boards and where you’d like to place the strips that will hold them
  7. Place the strips of wood that will hold the spoons at those measurements
  8. Using your drill, screw the strips securely from the back.
  9. Hang your beautiful soon rack up on a wall for the world to see!
  10. Put your spoons in their new little holders so everyone can see how pretty they are!!!:)

I loved how this project gave me a way to display my beloved spoon collection and was pretty all at the same time! At least I think it is anyway:) That’s one thing I have noticed since developing my personal sense of style though: if it’s pretty to you, it usually ends up looking pretty in your home. That’s my secret behind turning most of my trash into treasure, really. I think these things that others have cast off as trash are actually treasures, and I just showcase that. I put them on display and usually after that, most people see the treasure in them, too;)
