DIY Vintage Farm Stand Sign

There are many things that feel very “farm-life” to me. They include my animals, fresh flowers, fresh produce, open spaces and vintage farm stand signs. When you look at any painting of a farm, you will almost always see a little sign that reads “corn” or “goats” or “berries”. As I looked around my budding little hobby farm though, I realized that that was the one thing I was missing! I needed my own little farm stand sign!! There are none to be found at my favorite antique honey holes, so I decided that this was just something I was gonna have to DIY:) I know I’m not the only one missing a sign, so here is how to DIY a vintage farm stand sign!

Supplies

  • 1- 1×4 board
  • 1 – pkg eyelet hooks
  • 1- pkg 3″ farmhouse style mailbox stickers
    • If you have a cricket, you could also use that to create these letters.
  • 1- small can of black paint
  • 1- small can of white paint
  • 1- paintbrush
    • Size up to you:)
  • 2- pieces of sandpaper
    • Or hand sander. Whatever you prefer.
    • One should be 120 grit
    • The other just needs to be a little finer, but you can decide how fine.
  • 1- small can of dark walnut stain
  • 4 ft of bailing wire

Step 1

  • Cut 1×4 into 3 14″ long pieces
    • Or whatever size you want:) (Up to 24″ anyway)

Step 2 (optional)

  • Sand the edges of the boards with 120 grade sandpaper to smooth sides
  • Dust off

Step 3

  • Paint black on top side
  • Let dry

Step 4

  • Stick 3″ farmhouse style mailbox stickers to the top side you just painted black

Step 5

  • Paint over the stickers with your white paint
  • Make sure to paint the sides this time, too
  • Let dry

Step 6

  • Sand edges
  • If possible, user the finer grade of sand paper this time

Step 7

Step 8

  • Once that’s dry, screw the eyelet hooks into the top and bottom of each board about 1″ from each end of each board
  • There are 4 eyelets on the top 2 boards. Two on the top and two on the bottom. Then there are only 2 on the top of the bottom board.

Step 9

  • Cut your bailing wire in half
  • Take one 2 ft strip of wire and cut it into 4 4″ strips
  • Attach those 4″ strips to the bottom and middle boards
  • Attach the remaining 2 ft strip to the top board and bend it into a semi circle
    • If you would not like your sign to hang very low, you can always trim this piece

Step 10

  • Hang your new beautiful vintage farm stand sign for the world to see!!!:)

And that is how to DIY a vintage farm stand sign! My little hobby farm is starting to feel more like that perfect picture of what a real “farm” looks like:) At least when everything is in its place, and my 5 lovely (but messy children) and 30+ animals haven’t destroyed anything. So, it probably looks like that 1 day a month. (haha!)

I like to keep it real here, friend. And the reality is that my house often does not look like that picture perfect farm. We’re messy. We’re chaotic. We have 15,000,000 projects going on all the time it seems like! But it’s our mess. Our beautiful, chaotic mess and I wouldn’t change it for the world:)

I hope that this DIY makes that picture perfect farm a little more of a reality for you. But, if it doesn’t, remember that the mess is okay. And also remember that whoever took the photo of that picture perfect Pinterest farm probably just pushed all their junk behind the barn before the took the shot anyway;)
