Cut Out Cookies
Growing up my Mom always made the best cut out cookies!! My children had so much fun getting together with their cousins to decorate them for the holidays. They are my Dad’s favorite!! But it wasn’t always like that.
When my Mom and Dad were first married my Dad wanted my Mom to make sugar cookies like his Mom used to make. So my Mom did like any good wife would do and she went on the hunt for the perfect sugar cookie recipe. She would make one and my Dad wouldn’t like it. She would make another and again….it “wasn’t like Mom made”.
My Dad kept telling her that they were too sweet. My Mom finally realized that what my Dad was wanting wasn’t your typical sugar cookie but more of a cut out cookie!!
Cut out cookies are fabulous on their own! (My Dad’s favorite way to eat them.) They aren’t as sweet as a sugar cookies. When you add the icing it’s just sweet enough without being sickening sweet.
I love these because they are so easy and you probably have all of the ingredients already in your home!!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup of shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 1/2 cups of AP flour
- 1/2 tsp. Salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp. Vanilla
Cream butter well and add sugar and egg. Blend. Add dry ingredients with milk. Blend. Chill for at least and hour. Roll out onto a floured work surface. You can make these as thin or thick as you want. Cut into any design. Bake at 350ยฐ for 10 to 12 minutes. Decorate with your favorite icing or eat them plain like my Daddy.
This recipe is so quick and fun for kids! We’ve made lots of fun memories decorating these for every holiday!!
I hope you can enjoy this recipe and pass it down for many years. ๐
